Quick-Glance Checklist (Do These First)
- ☑️ Find and turn off the stopcock (main water stop tap).
 - ☑️ Make electrics safe: switch off affected circuits at the consumer unit if water is near sockets, lights, or the boiler.
 - ☑️ Contain water with buckets, towels, and trays; protect floors and valuables.
 - ☑️ Relieve pressure: after shut-off, open cold taps briefly to drain excess water.
 - ☑️ Turn off the boiler/heating (especially if the leak is from heating pipework or the boiler).
 - ☑️ Photograph the damage for insurance.
 - ☑️ Call an emergency plumber London team and share access details.

The First 10 Minutes: Step-by-Step
0:00–1:30 — Stop the Source
- Go straight to the stopcock (a wheel valve or quarter-turn lever) and close it clockwise/turn the lever a quarter turn.
Common locations in London homes: under the kitchen sink, utility cupboard, downstairs WC, under stairs, near the water meter, or in a front garden/pavement box (external stop tap often needs a key). - Can’t find it? Look for isolation valves (small chrome levers) on the pipe feeding the problem area (e.g., under a sink or toilet). Turn these off as a temporary fix.

1:30–3:00 — Make Electrics Safe
- If water is near electrics, go to the consumer unit (fuse box) and switch off the affected MCB/RCD. If unsure, turn off the main switch until the immediate danger is over.
 - Do not touch wet switches/sockets. Keep everyone away from affected areas.

3:00–5:00 — Contain & Protect
- Catch and divert water: place buckets, trays, and towels under the leak. Use plastic sheeting or bin liners to protect carpets, wood floors, and furniture.
 - Ceiling bulge? After shut-off, a bulging, water-laden plasterboard ceiling can fail. Keep people clear. If safe, carefully pierce a small hole at the lowest point to release water into a bucket. If in doubt, wait for an engineer.

5:00–7:00 — Relieve System Pressure
- With the stopcock closed, open cold taps (especially nearest the leak) to drain residual water. Close them once flow slows to a trickle.
 - Turn off your boiler/heating and immersion heater to protect pumps and controls. For heating leaks, close radiator valves on the leaking radiator if accessible.

7:00–9:00 — Evidence & Communication
- Take quick photos/videos of the leak source, damaged areas, and any affected electrics—useful for both the plumber and insurance.
 - Move valuables and soft furnishings out of harm’s way. Keep pets and children clear.

9:00–10:00 — Call an Emergency Plumber in London
- Call an emergency plumber London service. Share:

- Exact leak location and what you’ve isolated
 - Property access (entry codes, concierge details, parking)
 - Any vulnerabilities (elderly residents, no heating, nursery)

- Keep your phone free—engineers often call en-route. Keep a bucket/towel rotation going until they arrive.

If You Live in a Flat (Important)
- Leak from above? Contact the neighbour/concierge immediately; water may need isolating on a riser serving multiple flats.
 - Know your building stop taps: There may be a communal valve; security or building management can help.
 - Responsibility: Inside-flat pipework is usually the leaseholder’s; communal stacks/risers are the freeholder’s/managing agent’s.

Where Is My Stop Tap in a London Home?
- Under kitchen sink • Utility cupboard • Downstairs WC • Under-stairs cupboard • Beside front door • Near water meter • Pavement box out front (Thames Water external stop tap).
 - Tip: A quarter-turn lever sits parallel to the pipe when on, and perpendicular when off.

What Not to Do
- ❌ Don’t use live electrics near water.
 - ❌ Don’t apply expanding foam or random sealants—they rarely hold and can delay a proper repair.
 - ❌ Don’t ignore a sagging ceiling; it can collapse.
 - ❌ Don’t reopen the stopcock until the fault is fixed or a plumber advises.

Prepare for the Engineer’s Arrival
- Clear access to the boiler, airing cupboard, stopcock, and the leak site.
 - Note boiler brand/model if relevant (photo of the data plate helps).
 - Keep pets secured; have towels/buckets ready; leave an outside light on after dark.

Typical Emergency Fixes We Handle
- Burst or frozen pipes • Leaking taps and flexi hoses • Toilet cistern overflows • Split radiator valves • Boiler leaks (PRV, pump, heat exchanger) • Stopcock replacements • Mains water leaks • Cylinder/immersion leaks.

Costs & Expectations (Guide Only)
- Emergency call-out + hourly or fixed price depending on the job.
 - Most minor leaks are stabilised within the first visit; permanent repairs may follow if parts are needed.
